NBA News: Minnesota Timberwolves Land LaMelo Ball in Blockbuster Trade With Hornets

STWF Sports | MINNEAPOLIS | June 25, 2026  — The Minnesota Timberwolves have made their boldest move of the offseason, reportedly acquiring star guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a blockbuster trade that immediately reshapes the direction of both franchises.

The deal sends Ball and guard Josh Green to Minnesota, while Charlotte receives forward/center Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, first-round pick swaps in 2028, 2029 and 2030, plus three second-round picks in 2029, 2032 and 2033. The move comes after aggressive interest from multiple teams following the conclusion of the NBA Draft and gives Minnesota one of the league’s most dynamic young backcourts.

For the Timberwolves, this is a win-now swing around Anthony Edwards. Ball, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, now joins Edwards, the No. 1 pick from that same class, creating a pairing loaded with pace, creativity and highlight potential. Ball averaged 20.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.1 assists, giving Minnesota a true lead guard who can push tempo, create easy looks and relieve some of the playmaking burden from Edwards.

The move also follows Minnesota’s reported trade of Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, signaling a major roster reset around Edwards and a clear willingness to remain aggressive financially. The Timberwolves are not treating their current window lightly. They are pushing deeper into luxury-tax territory with the belief that Ball’s passing, transition game and shot-making can raise the ceiling of a team already built to compete near the top of the Western Conference.

Ball’s arrival gives Minnesota an offensive engine unlike anyone currently on the roster. His court vision should fit naturally with Edwards’ downhill scoring and late-clock shot creation. In transition, the Timberwolves can now pressure defenses with two guards capable of turning rebounds into instant scoring chances. Ball’s ability to throw ahead, hit cutters and create from deep range gives Minnesota another layer of unpredictability.

There are questions, of course. Ball has battled injuries earlier in his career and has drawn scrutiny for shot selection and defensive consistency. Minnesota will need its coaching staff and defensive infrastructure to help cover those concerns. Still, with Rudy Gobert anchoring the back line and Edwards capable of taking difficult perimeter assignments, the Timberwolves appear confident they can maximize Ball’s strengths while managing the risks.

For Charlotte, the deal represents a dramatic pivot.

Moving Ball at 24 years old is a franchise-altering decision, especially after a productive and healthy season. But the Hornets chose to cash in on his peak trade value and reshape the roster around Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel. By adding Reid and a deep collection of future draft assets, Charlotte gives itself more flexibility to build a younger, cleaner long-term core.

Reid gives the Hornets a frontcourt piece who can score, stretch the floor and fit with multiple lineup combinations. More importantly, the unprotected 2033 first-round pick and three pick swaps give Charlotte a long runway of future leverage. In a league where draft control is often the currency of rebuilds, the Hornets secured a package that gives them optionality.

Josh Green’s inclusion helps balance the deal for Minnesota while giving the Timberwolves another athletic wing who can defend, run the floor and fit into a supporting role. His presence matters because a trade of this size is not just about star power. Minnesota needs depth and role players who can function around Ball and Edwards without demanding the ball.

The trade also changes expectations overnight. Minnesota is no longer simply trying to stay competitive in the West. The Timberwolves are making a clear statement that they believe Edwards is ready to lead a title push and that Ball can be the co-star to help unlock the next level.

For Charlotte, the message is just as clear. The Hornets are starting a new chapter, one centered on patience, draft capital and a younger foundation.

Blockbuster trades are often judged twice: once when they happen and again when the picks, players and postseason results settle years later. For now, Minnesota has landed one of the NBA’s most gifted young guards, while Charlotte has chosen a fresh direction.

The offseason just got a lot louder.
