Capital City Go-Go Hire Tevon Saddler as New Head Coach
The Capital City Go-Go have found their next leader, hiring former Nicholls State head coach Tevon Saddler as the franchise’s new head coach. The move brings one of college basketball’s brightest young coaches back to his home state of Maryland and into the Washington Wizards organization.
At just 31 years old, Saddler becomes the second-youngest head coach in the NBA G League. He replaces Cody Toppert, who was promoted to the Washington Wizards’ NBA coaching staff after guiding the Go-Go through one of the most successful periods in franchise history.
For Nicholls State, Saddler leaves behind a program that experienced a resurgence under his leadership. Over three seasons, he compiled a 54-46 overall record while leading the Colonels to back-to-back 20-win seasons—the first time the program had accomplished that feat. His success earned national recognition as one of the rising stars in college basketball coaching.
Saddler’s journey to the NBA G League has been anything but traditional. After starring as a player at Nicholls, he quickly climbed the coaching ranks through stops at South Alabama, Nicholls, McNeese, and Maryland before returning to his alma mater as head coach in 2023. His reputation for player development, recruiting, and building relationships made him an attractive candidate for the Wizards organization.
The move also marks a homecoming for the Aberdeen, Maryland native, who now returns to his home state to oversee one of the NBA’s premier developmental franchises. The Go-Go play a critical role in developing talent for the Washington Wizards, giving Saddler an opportunity to work closely with young prospects while preparing players for the NBA level.
For Nicholls State, the departure creates another significant coaching search at a pivotal moment for the program. Saddler elevated expectations in Thibodaux and helped restore the Colonels as contenders in the Southland Conference. Athletic Director Jonathan Terrell will now be tasked with finding a successor capable of maintaining that momentum.
Meanwhile, Saddler now takes on one of the most intriguing jobs in the G League, where success is measured not only in wins but in preparing the next generation of NBA talent. His rapid rise through the coaching profession continues, and his latest opportunity places him just one step away from the NBA sidelines.
