WNBA Preview: Dallas Wings Set for First-Ever Meeting With Toronto Tempo

STWF Sports | TORONTO | July 5, 2026 — The Dallas Wings will step into new territory Sunday afternoon when they face the Toronto Tempo for the first time in franchise history.

Dallas continues its four-game road trip on July 5 at Coca-Cola Coliseum, where the Wings will meet the WNBA expansion Tempo at 2 p.m. CT. The game will air locally on KFAA, with Ron Thulin handling play-by-play duties alongside analyst Fran Harris.

The Wings enter the matchup at 12-8 after opening the road swing with a gritty 86-83 comeback win over the Connecticut Sun on Thursday night. Dallas trailed by as many as 14 points but surged late behind another standout performance from Paige Bueckers, who continues to play at one of the highest levels in the league.

Bueckers finished with a game-high 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against Connecticut. She scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the final period, helping Dallas erase the deficit and steal a road win in the closing seconds.

The performance marked Bueckers’ fourth consecutive game with at least 25 points, the longest active streak in the WNBA and the longest such run of her young career. For a Wings team still working through rotations, injuries and the demands of a road-heavy stretch, her late-game control has become one of Dallas’ clearest advantages.

The Wings needed every bit of that production in Connecticut. Dallas led for less than four minutes but made winning plays late, with Jessica Shepard sealing the victory at the free-throw line after the defense came up with a key stop. The result improved Dallas to 12-8 and gave the club momentum heading into its first look at Toronto.

Dallas Wings vs. Toronto Tempo: A Historic Showdown

Sunday’s matchup will be historic for both sides. It is the first meeting between Dallas and the Tempo, who are playing their inaugural WNBA season. The teams are scheduled to meet three times during the 2026 regular season, creating the start of a new interconference series.

Toronto did not select any Wings players during the 2026 expansion draft, but the roster has familiar Dallas connections. Marina Mabrey and Isabelle Harrison, two veterans helping guide the first-year franchise, both previously played for the Wings. Mabrey spent three seasons in Dallas from 2020-22, while Harrison played for the club from 2019-22.

That familiarity adds an extra layer to Sunday’s contest. Mabrey remains a proven perimeter scorer and shot creator, while Harrison brings experience, frontcourt versatility and toughness. Both players understand the Wings’ organization and will be part of a Tempo group looking to establish itself at home against a playoff-positioned Dallas team.

Toronto enters the game at 9-10 after falling 89-80 to the Phoenix Mercury on June 27. The Tempo showed balance in that loss, with six players scoring in double figures. Nyara Sabally led the way with 14 points, while Julie Allemand posted a points-assists double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

That kind of distribution reflects the structure head coach Sandy Brondello has tried to build in Toronto’s first season. Brondello, one of the league’s most experienced coaches, has guided the Tempo through the challenges of expansion basketball while leaning on veteran play, spacing and ball movement.

Brondello also brings extensive history against Dallas. Across previous stops with Phoenix and New York, she owns an 18-14 regular-season record against the Wings. Her experience should give Toronto a steady hand as the Tempo try to slow a Dallas offense led by Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, Arike Ogunbowale and Shepard.

For Dallas, the key will be avoiding another slow start. The Wings had to chase Connecticut for most of Thursday’s game before their fourth-quarter push. Against Toronto, cleaner first-half execution could make the difference, especially on the road against a team looking for a signature win.

Fudd’s shooting and defense will also be important. Shepard’s rebounding and playmaking continue to give Dallas stability in the frontcourt, while Ogunbowale’s scoring threat remains central to how defenses guard the Wings.

Sunday gives Dallas a chance to extend its road momentum and set the tone in a brand-new matchup. For Toronto, it is another opportunity to measure itself against one of the league’s rising teams.

The Wings survived in Connecticut. Now, they head north looking to keep climbing.
