World Cup News: Scotland Prepares for Historic World Cup Return as Bank Holiday Marks Haiti Opener

STWF Sports | Foxborough,Mass. | June 9, 2026  — Scotland’s long wait for the World Cup stage is finally over, and the country is preparing to celebrate the moment in a way that reflects the scale of the occasion.

Steve Clarke’s side will begin its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, marking Scotland’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998. For the Tartan Army, it is more than a group-stage opener. It is the return of a national team to soccer’s biggest stage after 28 years away.

Scotland has qualified for the World Cup for the ninth time in its history, and the excitement around the country has been matched by a special national gesture. Monday, June 15, has been approved as a bank holiday in Scotland, scheduled for the first working day after the opening match against Haiti.

Scotland’s Historic World Cup Return

The timing carries practical and symbolic importance. Scotland’s opener kicks off at 2 a.m. BST, meaning the match is expected to finish close to 4 a.m. on Sunday morning. The bank holiday gives supporters a chance to gather, celebrate and recover from one of the country’s biggest sporting nights in decades.

King Charles approved the holiday following a proposal from First Minister John Swinney, who pushed for the day to recognize Scotland’s return to the global stage. Swinney said the occasion deserved national recognition because of what the team’s qualification means to fans across the country.

Scotland’s return has revived memories of past World Cup campaigns and created fresh optimism around Clarke’s squad. The men’s national team has appeared at eight previous World Cups but has never advanced beyond the group stage. That history gives this summer’s tournament added weight.

The country’s World Cup journey has included appearances in 1954, 1958, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1998. Scotland qualified for the 1950 tournament but withdrew. Since 1998, the national team had been absent from the World Cup until this latest breakthrough.

Scotland’s overall World Cup record sits at 23 matches played, four wins, seven draws and 12 losses, with 25 goals scored and 41 conceded. The Tartan Army has waited since 1990 to see Scotland win a World Cup match, when the team defeated Sweden during group play.

That drought is one of the major storylines entering the 2026 tournament. Scotland will face Haiti first before taking on Morocco and Brazil in Group C. The group presents a challenging path, but Scotland arrives with momentum and belief after a strong run of warm-up performances.

Before traveling to North America, Scotland defeated Curaçao 4-1 at Hampden Park, with Findlay Curtis, Lawrence Shankland and Ryan Christie among the goal scorers. The team then closed its pre-tournament schedule with a commanding 4-0 win over Bolivia in New Jersey.

Those performances have given supporters reason to believe this squad can compete with confidence. The opener against Haiti will be especially important because it represents Scotland’s best early opportunity to build momentum before facing Morocco and Brazil.

For Haiti, the match also carries enormous meaning, as the nation returns to the World Cup for the first time since 1974. That makes the Group C opener a meeting between two countries embracing historic returns.

Still, for Scotland, the spotlight will be firmly on ending nearly three decades of waiting. The Tartan Army will travel across the Atlantic in large numbers, bringing noise, color and emotion to Foxborough.

Whether Scotland wins, draws or loses, the opening match will mark a national moment. The bank holiday ensures that fans at home will have time to share in it.

After 28 years, Scotland is back at the World Cup. Now the challenge is turning celebration into history!
