World Cup News: USWNT Edges Brazil in Heated Friendly as Tempers Boil Over in Fortaleza

STWF Sports | FORTALEZA, Brazil | June 10, 2026 — The United States women’s national team closed its 2025-26 season with a gritty road win, but the final score only told part of the story.

In front of 55,144 fans at Arena Castelão, the USWNT defeated Brazil 1-0 in a tense friendly that felt anything but casual. After dropping the first match of the two-game series 2-1 on Sunday, the Americans responded with a scrappy performance that delivered both a rare result and a chaotic finish.

The deciding moment came in the second half when Sophia Wilson, recently back with the U.S. setup after maternity leave, created the breakthrough. Wilson’s long-range effort deflected off Brazil’s Isabela Chagas and found the net for an own goal. It was not the cleanest winner, but it was enough to give the USWNT a statement result on Brazilian soil.

The victory marked the first time the United States had beaten Brazil in Brazil since 1997, a notable milestone with the 2027 Women’s World Cup set to be hosted in the South American country. For head coach Emma Hayes, the result offered another example of the toughness and composure she has been trying to build since taking charge in 2024.

The USWNT’s Gritty Victory

But the match will be remembered just as much for what happened late.

Brazil’s frustration began to boil over in the 76th minute, when head coach Arthur Elias and multiple staff members were shown red cards. The tension on the sideline quickly spilled onto the field, turning the final stretch into a fiery and emotional scene.

In stoppage time, Brazil forward Bia Zaneratto received a second yellow card after shoving American defender Emily Sonnett. Moments later, Tarciane was sent off after the referee ruled she had elbowed Wilson in the mouth. Wilson remained down for several minutes as medical staff attended to her.

Those dismissals left Brazil to finish the match with nine players, but the drama did not end with the final whistle.

After the match, emotions continued to flare. Ludmila and Manchester City winger Kerolin were also shown red cards, adding to a chaotic total of eight dismissals involving Brazil players and staff. Brazilian players had to be separated from the officials, and security personnel equipped with riot gear entered the scene to help calm the situation.

The atmosphere reflected the intensity of a rivalry that has often produced dramatic moments. This time, however, the match crossed into disorder, leaving frustration on the Brazilian side and surprise from observers.

Brazil midfielder Angelina was direct in her criticism after the match, calling the situation a “complete disgrace.” She questioned the officiating, VAR decisions and what she felt was a lack of consistency in how contact was judged.

Angelina also said there was disrespect between players on the field, adding another layer to an already heated night.

While Brazil focused much of its attention on the officiating, Hayes took a different approach. The USWNT coach remained composed during the match and later emphasized the importance of controlling behavior from the technical area.

“My job is to have respect for the officials,” Hayes said. “My job is to make sure I stay in my technical area. There is only one person allowed to stand.”

Hayes added that her responsibility is to model the standard she expects from her players, especially in difficult environments.

“And my job is to be a role model for my players, to display the behaviors to them that I want from them,” Hayes said. “So I can only talk about my behavior, and I thought my behavior was good.”

For the USWNT, the win was valuable beyond the final score. Winning in Brazil is never easy, and doing it in front of a loud, energized crowd provided the kind of hostile environment that can sharpen a team ahead of major tournaments.

The United States had to manage pressure, physical play and emotional swings, all while protecting a narrow lead. That type of performance matters for a group still growing under Hayes.

Wilson’s role was also significant. Her return to the national team has added another attacking option, and her decisive involvement showed how quickly she can impact a match.

Brazil, meanwhile, will have to deal with the aftermath of a night that unraveled late. With the 2027 World Cup approaching, the scenes in Fortaleza served as a reminder of how much intensity may surround the tournament on home soil.

For the USWNT, the message was cleaner: survive the storm, stay composed and leave with the win.
