Homegrown Hero: Houma’s Gavin Dugas Announces Retirement from Baseball

Every athlete remembers where it all started.

For Gavin Dugas, it started on the ballfields of Houma. It eventually took him to Alex Box Stadium, Omaha, and into professional baseball. Now, after more than two decades in the game, one of South Louisiana’s most accomplished baseball players is officially calling it a career.

The Houma native and former LSU national champion announced Monday that he is retiring from baseball, sharing an emotional message on social media reflecting on the game that shaped his life.

“As one door closes, another door opens,” Dugas wrote. “Being between the lines for the last 20+ years has brought so much joy and meaning to my life… One promise I made to myself and my dad is that I would always play this game with every ounce of energy I had and until my body no longer allowed me to compete at the highest level.”

He admitted the decision wasn’t one he was fully prepared to make but said he believes God has another purpose waiting for him.

“After being able to reflect on my career, I am so thankful for the memories, challenges, failures and successes… The relationships developed that will last a lifetime with so many great people will forever be my greatest success from the game of baseball.”

Dugas closed his message by thanking everyone who stood beside him throughout his journey.

A Houma Star Before LSU Knew His Name

Long before becoming a household name in college baseball, Dugas was filling up stat sheets at Houma Christian School.

The local standout earned Rawlings All-American honors and First Team All-State recognition as a senior in 2018 after hitting .452 with 33 hits, 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He also finished his prep career as a four-time All-District selection and two-time District Most Valuable Player.

His success made him one of the state’s top recruits and ultimately led him to LSU.

A Career Built on Perseverance

Dugas’ career in Baton Rouge wasn’t always smooth.

A thumb injury during his freshman season in 2019 limited his opportunities, and another shortened season followed in 2020. Even in 2022, injuries once again threatened to derail his season.

Each time, Dugas found a way back.

His breakout came in 2021 when he became one of the SEC’s most dangerous hitters. He led the conference with 66 RBIs while hitting .295 with 19 home runs and earned NCAA Eugene Regional Most Outstanding Player honors.

His resilience became one of the defining characteristics of his career.

Leaving His Mark on LSU History

By the time his collegiate career came to an end, Dugas had become one of the leaders of one of the greatest teams in LSU baseball history.

In 2023, he hit .290 with 17 home runs, 46 RBIs and 74 runs scored while starting 66 games at second base.

His biggest moments came on college baseball’s biggest stage.

Dugas homered against Tennessee in LSU’s opening game of the College World Series before delivering another home run against Florida in Game 1 of the championship series. The Tigers would go on to defeat the Gators in three games to capture the program’s seventh national championship.

His performance earned him a place on the College World Series All-Tournament Team.

Over five seasons at LSU, Dugas appeared in 201 games, batting .287 with 44 home runs, 148 RBIs and 161 runs scored. He also set the school record after being hit by 68 pitches during his career and proudly wore LSU’s iconic No. 8 jersey during the final two seasons of his collegiate career.

Chasing the Major League Dream

The Washington Nationals selected Dugas in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft, giving the Houma native an opportunity to continue pursuing his dream at the professional level.

He spent time with the Fredericksburg Nationals, the FCL Nationals and the Wilmington Blue Rocks during his professional career.

Across two seasons in the Nationals organization, Dugas recorded 137 hits, 13 home runs, 74 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and 91 runs before being released earlier this month.

More Than Statistics

While his playing days have ended sooner than he hoped, Dugas’ impact extends far beyond the numbers.

For baseball fans across Terrebonne Parish, he became proof that a kid from Houma could compete on the biggest stages in the sport. From starring at Houma Christian to helping LSU bring another national championship trophy back to Baton Rouge, Dugas represented his hometown every step of the way.

Every baseball career eventually reaches its final inning.

For Gavin Dugas, that inning comes with the respect of a community that watched him grow from a local standout into a national champion and professional baseball player.

The cleats may be hung up, but his legacy in South Louisiana baseball is firmly cemented.
