MiLB News: Jack Leiter Set for Rehab Start as RoughRiders Host Wichita

STWF Sports | FRISCO, Texas | August 19, 2026 — Riders Field will have a familiar face on the mound Thursday night, but this time with major league stakes attached.

Jack Leiter’s Path to Recovery

Texas Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter is expected to make a rehabilitation start for the Frisco RoughRiders on Thursday, Aug. 20, when Frisco continues its home series against the Wichita Wind Surge, the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.

The appearance will mark an important step in Leiter’s recovery from arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle, which he underwent on June 23. The Rangers placed him on the 60-day injured list following the procedure, temporarily halting a season in which he had established himself as a regular member of Texas’ starting rotation.

Before landing on the injured list, Leiter made 15 starts for the Rangers in 2026, going 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA across 80 innings. The 26-year-old recorded 83 strikeouts against 35 walks, showing the swing-and-miss ability that has remained one of the defining traits of his professional career.

Thursday’s outing will give Texas an opportunity to evaluate Leiter’s health, command and overall readiness as he works toward a potential return to the major league rotation.

It will also bring Leiter back to the ballpark where his professional career began.

The Rangers selected Leiter with the second overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt, and he made his professional debut with Frisco during the 2022 season. He spent portions of both 2022 and 2023 with the RoughRiders as he worked his way through the organization.

His time in Double-A featured both development and growing pains, but Leiter also left his mark on the Frisco record book. Across two seasons with the RoughRiders, he went 5-16 with a 5.32 ERA while making 41 starts. That total ranks ninth in franchise history.

His strikeout production stood out even more.

Leiter accumulated 219 strikeouts during his Frisco tenure, placing him fifth in RoughRiders history. His ability to overpower hitters helped reinforce the potential that made him one of the most highly regarded pitching prospects in baseball after a decorated collegiate career at Vanderbilt.

Since reaching the majors, Leiter has appeared in 53 games with 50 starts, posting a 13-20 record and a 4.95 ERA. His progression at the major league level has included flashes of the premium arsenal that made him a top draft selection, while consistency and command have remained central to his development.

That makes Thursday’s rehab appearance significant beyond the attraction of seeing a Rangers starter back in a RoughRiders uniform.

For Texas, the primary focus will be on how Leiter responds physically after nearly two months away from major league competition. Rehab starts can vary in workload, and the Rangers have not announced how many pitches or innings Leiter is expected to throw against Wichita.

For Frisco fans, however, the appearance adds another major league connection to an already important homestand.

The RoughRiders are in the middle of a series against Wichita at Riders Field, and Leiter’s scheduled start gives the Thursday matchup an added spotlight. Fans who followed his path from Double-A prospect to the Rangers rotation will have an opportunity to see another chapter of that development unfold in Frisco.

The start is expected to be one of the biggest attractions of the RoughRiders’ August schedule as Leiter begins the final stage of his recovery.

If all goes well Thursday, the next step could move him closer to Arlington.

For one night, though, Leiter’s road back to the Rangers will run directly through Riders Field.
