MiLB Recap: Early Deficit Sinks Frisco RoughRiders as Naturals Even Series at Riders Field

FRISCO, Texas (May 6, 2026) — The Frisco RoughRiders could not overcome an early hole Wednesday afternoon as the Northwest Arkansas Naturals responded with a 9-2 victory at Riders Field to even the six-game series at one game apiece.

Frisco RoughRiders Striving for Consistency

After exploding offensively in Tuesday’s 10-3 series-opening win, Frisco struggled to generate consistent momentum at the plate despite strong individual performances from John Taylor and Keyber Rodriguez.

Northwest Arkansas wasted little time taking control against RoughRiders starter Blake Townsend. The Naturals capitalized on command issues early, drawing four walks in the first two innings while building a 4-0 advantage.

Townsend battled through the rough start and eventually settled into rhythm on the mound, but the early damage proved costly.

The left-hander finished four innings, allowing four runs while striking out seven hitters, tying a career high for strikeouts in a professional game. It marked the first time Townsend recorded seven strikeouts in a game since 2021.

Despite the final line, there were encouraging signs from the Frisco starter. Townsend struck out six of the final seven batters he faced and began locating his pitches far more effectively after the opening innings.

Still, Northwest Arkansas found ways to capitalize whenever opportunities presented themselves.

The RoughRiders finally broke through offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning against Naturals starter Felix Arronde. Keyber Rodriguez and John Taylor each recorded singles before Rodriguez eventually scored on a Northwest Arkansas defensive miscue to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Frisco appeared to gain a spark entering the middle innings, but the Naturals immediately answered with the game’s decisive blow in the fifth.

Northwest Arkansas erupted for five runs in the inning to extend its lead to 9-1, highlighted by a two-run home run from former RoughRider and longtime Major League catcher Jorge Alfaro.

Alfaro’s blast silenced the Riders Field crowd and capped the Naturals’ biggest offensive inning of the afternoon.

Arronde controlled the game from there.

The right-hander improved to 2-1 on the season after limiting Frisco’s lineup and preventing the RoughRiders from stringing together sustained rallies. Frisco entered Wednesday averaging more than six runs per game this season, but Northwest Arkansas successfully neutralized the club’s power-heavy approach.

Even in defeat, several RoughRiders continued their impressive individual seasons.

Taylor delivered the best performance of his professional career, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while setting a new career high in hits. The infielder raised his batting average to .333, which now ranks sixth-best in the Texas League.

Rodriguez also continued his breakout campaign by collecting three more hits, marking his sixth three-hit game of the season. The infielder now leads the Texas League with 39 hits through Frisco’s first 29 games.

The RoughRiders managed one final run in the eighth inning when Taylor singled home Dylan Dreiling to trim the deficit to 9-2, but Frisco could not mount any serious comeback threat late.

The loss dropped the RoughRiders to 15-14 on the season after they briefly climbed above .500 following Tuesday’s offensive outburst.

Now, Frisco quickly shifts its focus toward Thursday night’s pivotal Game 3 matchup.

Top Rangers pitching prospect Winston Santos is expected to take the mound for the RoughRiders during a 6:35 p.m. Thirsty Thursday contest at Riders Field. Santos enters searching for his first win of the season against Northwest Arkansas right-hander Drew Beam.

While Wednesday’s defeat exposed some inconsistency on both the mound and defensively, Frisco continues to showcase one of the most dangerous offenses in the Texas League.

If the RoughRiders can combine their explosive lineup with improved command from the pitching staff, the club remains well-positioned to stay competitive throughout the remainder of the series and beyond.
