MiLB Recap: Frisco RoughRiders Sweep Springfield Doubleheader, Take Series and Move Into First Place

STWF Sports | FRISCO, Texas | June 7, 2026 — The Frisco RoughRiders closed their homestand with exactly the kind of statement they needed.

Frisco RoughRiders: A Force in the Texas League

Frisco swept the Springfield Cardinals in Sunday’s doubleheader at Riders Field, winning both games by identical 6-4 scores to claim the six-game series four games to two. The two victories pushed the RoughRiders to 30-25 and gave them sole possession of first place in the Texas League South with two weeks remaining in the first half.

For a club chasing a postseason position, Sunday delivered more than two wins. It brought timely power, production from a major league rehab bat, late-game execution and another loud performance from one of the hottest hitters in the Texas Rangers’ minor league system.

Game one started with Springfield striking first. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead on a Ryan Campos single, but Frisco answered immediately in the bottom half. Texas Rangers infielder Josh Smith, playing in his first rehab game with the RoughRiders, led off with a solo home run to tie the game.

Springfield moved back in front with two runs in the second inning, but the RoughRiders responded again in the third. Dylan Dreiling drove in a run with an RBI single, and Keith Jones II brought home another on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 3-3.

The matchup remained tight into the middle innings. With the score tied 4-4 entering the fifth, Josh Trentadue gave Frisco a clean inning out of the bullpen. The scoreless frame gave the RoughRiders a chance to swing momentum, and Rafe Perich took advantage.

Perich launched a go-ahead home run off Jack Findlay, putting Frisco in front 5-4. Dreiling later added a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 6-4. From there, Wilian Bormie finished the job, locking down his third save of the season.

The second game followed a similar script, with Frisco again finding a way to win late.

The RoughRiders jumped ahead in the first inning when Perich singled to left field, scoring Smith for a 1-0 lead. Springfield tied the game in the third on a bases-loaded walk from Trey Paige, and the score remained even until the sixth inning.

Austin Roberts delivered a scoreless fifth in relief, keeping the game tied and setting the stage for another Frisco burst.

Once again, Perich delivered the swing that changed the game. Facing Hunter Hayes in the sixth, Perich hammered his second home run of the day, a two-run shot that gave the RoughRiders a 3-1 lead. A few batters later, Ian Moller added a towering two-run homer of his own, extending the advantage to 5-1.

Orlando Martinez followed with an RBI double, and Frisco suddenly had a 6-1 cushion.

Springfield made things interesting in the seventh, hitting three solo home runs to cut the deficit to two. Janser Lara settled the inning and recorded the final three outs, securing the win, the doubleheader sweep and the series victory.

Smith made an immediate impact in his return to Frisco. Across his first two rehab games with the RoughRiders, he went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two walks. His presence at the top of the order gave Frisco another experienced bat and created early pressure in both games.

Perich continued his remarkable start with the RoughRiders. With two home runs Sunday, he now has four homers in his first nine games with Frisco. His 15 total home runs this season remain the most by any hitter in the Rangers’ minor league system.

The timing of his production could not be better. Perich provided the go-ahead swing in both games Sunday and has quickly become one of Frisco’s most dangerous late-game bats.

The doubleheader sweep also carried major standings implications. With the two victories, Frisco now sits 1.5 games ahead of second-place Midland and 3.5 games ahead of third-place Amarillo in the Texas League South.

After battling through a competitive series with Springfield, the RoughRiders now head into the penultimate week of the first half in control of their own position.

Frisco will travel to face the San Antonio Missions for the first time this season, opening the road series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

The RoughRiders leave Riders Field with momentum, first place and a lineup that continues to produce in big moments. With two weeks left in the half, Frisco has put itself exactly where it wants to be — at the top of the division.
