MiLB Recap Patient Approach Pays Off: Frisco RoughRiders Weaponize Season-High 10 Walks to Upend Missions, 7-5

STWF Sports | FRISCO, Texas May 24, 2026 — Good things come to those who wait, and for the Frisco RoughRiders, extreme patience proved to be the ultimate weapon on Saturday night. Demonstrating elite plate discipline when the margin for error was razor-thin, Frisco weaponized a season-high 10 walks to orchestrate a thrilling late-inning comeback, downing the San Antonio Missions 7-5 in front of a packed crowd at Riders Field.

With the victory, the RoughRiders (22-21) guaranteed themselves a shot at a series split on Sunday, while the Missions dropped to 17-27.

Chipping Away at the Early Deficit

Frisco RoughRiders: Patience and Precision on Display

The contest did not start according to plan for the home dugout. San Antonio ambushed Frisco starter Leandro Lopez in the opening frame, stringing together four hits to fuel early RBI production from Tirso Ornelas and Albert Fabian. The Missions magnified the pressure in the top of the third when Romeo Sanabria launched a towering two-run home run, leaving the RoughRiders staring at a daunting 4-0 deficit.

However, Frisco’s bats quickly found their rhythm against San Antonio’s starter Jhony Brito. Testing the Major League rehabber and former New York Yankee and San Diego Padre arm, the RoughRiders tagged Brito for four hits in the bottom of the third. Frainyer Chavez ignited the response with a sharp RBI double, followed closely by a John Taylor RBI single to slice the deficit in half.

Frisco edged closer in the fourth, manufacturing another run courtesy of a Cody Freeman sacrifice fly, dragging the scoreboard to 4-3. The RBI marked a milestone for the Texas Rangers infielder, who collected his first hit and run-driven-in of his current Double-A rehabilitation assignment.

The Decisive Seventh-Inning Avalanche

San Antonio extended their lead to 5-3 in the sixth, but Frisco’s stellar bullpen dynamic kept the game within striking distance. Right-hander Josh Sborz (1-0) entered in the seventh, dealing a masterful, scoreless frame to earn the victory and set the stage for an offensive explosion.

In the bottom of the seventh, the RoughRiders sent 10 men to the plate in an absolute masterclass of situational hitting and strike-zone awareness. Arturo Disla initiated the damage by lacing an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Rather than panicking, the Frisco lineup simply refused to chase outside the zone.

The Turning Point: Back-to-back bases-loaded walks from Keith Jones II and Corey Joyce forced home the go-ahead runs, giving Frisco a permanent 7-5 advantage without requiring another swing of the bat.

Once they seized the lead, the RoughRiders slammed the door shut. The combination of Sborz, Zach Bryant, and Jonathan Brand completely suffocated the San Antonio offense over the final stretches. Frisco retired the final six Missions hitters in order, culminating in Brand navigating a flawless ninth inning to secure his first Double-A save of the year.

Statistical Notebook & Sunday Preview

  • Discipline on Display: Frisco’s 10 free passes marked a new season peak. Corey Joyce and Ian Moller paced the patient approach, registering three walks apiece.

  • The Buffalo Bounces Back: After experiencing his first hitless game at the Double-A level on Thursday, Arturo Disla roared back with a team-high three-hit masterpiece.

  • Multi-Hit Sparkplugs: John Taylor and Max Wagner anchored the interior of the order with highly productive multi-hit performances.

Frisco will look to cap off the weekend with a series split on Sunday evening. Left-hander Dylan MacLean (3-0, 5.01 ERA) will take the mound for the RoughRiders against San Antonio right-hander Miguel Mendez (1-0, 3.24 ERA). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. at Riders Field for Throwback Sunday, featuring an Ian Kinsler Bobblehead Giveaway and postgame Summer Sunday Fireworks.
