UFL News: Rhode Island Breakers Unveiled as UFL’s Newest Franchise Ahead of 2027 Season

STWF Sports | PAWTUCKET, R.I. | October 18, 2026 — The United Football League officially introduced the Rhode Island Breakers on Sunday, unveiling the franchise’s name, logo and colors during a launch event at Centreville Bank Stadium in front of thousands of fans.

The Breakers will begin play in the spring of 2027, giving Rhode Island a new professional football team and adding another chapter to the state’s long history with the sport.

The franchise name carries multiple layers of meaning. It pays tribute to spring football history, including the former USFL Breakers franchise that competed in Boston, New Orleans and Portland during the 1980s, while also tying directly to Rhode Island’s coastal identity.

The league said the name was inspired by the relentless waves that crash along the state’s shoreline, symbolizing toughness, persistence and resilience.

A Nod to Rhode Island Football History

Introducing the Rhode Island Breakers: A New Era in Local Sports

Professional football in Rhode Island dates back more than a century.

The Providence Steam Roller, founded in 1916, became a charter member of the NFL and captured the league championship in 1928. The team also helped make football history by becoming the first NFL club to play a night game under lights.

The arrival of the Breakers gives the UFL an opportunity to reconnect with that tradition while building something new in the Ocean State.

League officials emphasized that the franchise is meant to represent Rhode Island directly, both in name and identity.

The team’s logo incorporates the state’s initials, with a lighthouse serving as the “I” inside the design. The lighthouse is intended to symbolize guidance, strength and community pride.

The team colors — Riptide Blue, Beacon Yellow, Nor’Easter Navy and Whitecap — were selected to reflect Rhode Island’s maritime history and coastal setting.

McCarron to Lead Inaugural Team

The Breakers will be coached by AJ McCarron, who enters his second season as a UFL head coach.

McCarron will bring the core of the 2026 Birmingham Stallions roster with him to Rhode Island, giving the franchise immediate continuity and a roster with established spring football experience.

That existing foundation should help the Breakers avoid some of the growing pains typically associated with a new franchise.

The roster will continue to develop through UFL Showcases, free agency and the 2027 UFL Draft, scheduled for Nov. 18 in St. Louis.

Rhode Island will hold the third overall pick in the first round and the second selection in the second round, giving McCarron and his staff an early opportunity to add impact talent.

Centreville Bank Stadium Becomes Home

The Breakers will play their home schedule at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket.

Season tickets are already on sale, with five-game packages starting at $75. Fans who purchase season tickets by Nov. 1 will also be entered for a chance to win a trip to St. Louis for the 2027 UFL Draft.

Season ticket members will receive additional benefits, including access to the same seat for every home game, exclusive merchandise discounts, member gifts, special events and priority access to postseason tickets.

UFL Continues Building Momentum

The Rhode Island launch comes as the UFL looks to build on a 2026 season that featured increased viewership, stronger ticket sales and a sold-out United Bowl.

The league also continued strengthening its role as a development pathway to the NFL. According to the UFL, 118 former players participated in NFL training camps, with 46 ultimately earning spots on active rosters or practice squads.

For Rhode Island, the next step is turning a brand launch into a football identity.

With McCarron leading the way, an experienced roster base and a coastal-inspired brand built around toughness and persistence, the Breakers will enter 2027 looking to establish themselves quickly.

The first wave has arrived in Rhode Island.
