STWF Sports | INDIANAPOLIS | June 4, 2026Caitlin Clark was not feeling her best Thursday night. The Indiana Fever guard still found a way to lead her team to one of its most important wins of the early season.

Clark battled through illness during Indiana’s 83-71 victory over the Atlanta Dream in a WNBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, helping the Fever snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 5-4 on the season. The win also added another chapter to the highly watched on-court rivalry between Clark and Angel Reese, with Clark’s teams now holding a 5-1 edge in their head-to-head meetings.

Clark finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and one block, delivering a strong all-around performance despite becoming sick at halftime. Reese posted a double-double for Atlanta with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the Dream struggled to find offensive rhythm against a much-improved Indiana defensive effort.

Caitlin Clark’s Remarkable Resilience

The Fever held Atlanta to its lowest-scoring game of the season and limited the Dream to a season-low 34.3 percent shooting from the field. It was also the fewest points Indiana has allowed in a game this season, a major step forward for a team looking to build consistency on both ends of the floor.

For Clark, the performance was even more impressive because of what she dealt with behind the scenes.

After the game, she revealed that she became sick at halftime and vomited before returning to play in the second half.

“I had to throw up … but you just keep playing,” Clark told reporters.

Clark said her competitiveness and love for the game pushed her to stay available. She credited Indiana’s defensive focus as the biggest reason for the win.

“I love this game and I’m competitive and I was going to do anything I could to help this team win,” Clark said. “I thought we played a really, really good game and we probably could have even made a few more baskets, but we guarded.”

Clark joked that once she got sick, she actually felt better physically in the second half. She said she tried to eat applesauce before everything came back up, then found a trash can and was able to continue.

“I felt light, so I was running around feeling good in the second half,” Clark said.

Fever head coach Stephanie White was unsure what caused Clark’s illness but acknowledged the guard was exerting a lot of energy while playing both ends of the floor.

“She was gassed,” White said. “She was playing both ends and she was doing a great job and was running the team.”

White said the team would evaluate what caused the vomiting, but her larger takeaway was Clark’s effort and Indiana’s complete defensive performance.

The win also helped shift the conversation around Clark and White after a week of outside speculation. A viral clip of a heated exchange between the two had sparked questions about possible tension between the Fever star and her head coach, though both had publicly downplayed the situation.

On Thursday, their energy told a different story.

During Indiana’s 18-3 run in the third quarter, Clark and White were seen celebrating with a chest bump before embracing. The moment quickly became one of the emotional highlights of the game.

Clark laughed about it afterward, joking that White’s injury history made the celebration a little risky.

“She’s had a lot of surgeries. So, I could’ve hurt her honestly,” Clark said.

The Fever guard then praised White’s passion and intensity, saying she enjoys playing for a coach who shows emotion.

“She’s fiery and competitive, so she shows passion too and she hypes her players up,” Clark said.

That energy seemed to carry through the rest of the team. Indiana played with more urgency, defended with more purpose and responded to recent adversity with a composed, connected performance.

For Atlanta, the loss was a frustrating offensive night. Reese still found a way to produce on the glass and record another double-double, but the Dream never fully solved Indiana’s defensive pressure.

The atmosphere also added to the drama. Reese was booed during player introductions, another reminder of how much attention follows matchups involving her and Clark.

Still, the bigger story was Indiana’s response. The Fever needed a win, needed a better defensive showing and needed their star guard to set the tone. Clark delivered all three, even while feeling far from 100 percent.

Indiana now turns its attention to Saturday night, when the Fever travel to Barclays Center to face the New York Liberty. With the team back above .500 and Clark leading through adversity, the Fever head into that matchup with renewed momentum after a slow start on the season.
