WNBA News: Caitlin Clark Delivers Late Heroics as Fever Edge Mystics on Game-Winning Three

STWF Sports | WASHINGTON | June 9, 2026 — Caitlin Clark has made a career out of turning pressure into theater, and on the road against the Washington Mystics, she delivered another signature moment.

Clark buried a game-winning three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift the Indiana Fever to a 78-76 victory over the Mystics, giving Indiana a needed road win and pushing the Fever above .500 at 6-5 on the season. After a stretch where her outside shot had been under a microscope, Clark responded the way elite scorers often do — by taking and making the biggest shot of the night.

The final possession instantly became the story. With Indiana trailing late, Clark found space beyond the arc and released a deep three over Washington rookie Cotie McMahon, her former Big Ten rival from Ohio State. The shot dropped, silencing the home crowd and sending the Fever bench into celebration.

Caitlin Clark: A Rising Star in the WNBA

Clark finished with a game-high 19 points, three rebounds, five assists and one steal while shooting 40 percent from three-point range. It was not a perfect offensive night, but it was a winning one — and for Indiana, that mattered most.

Her teammates were not surprised.

“I mean are we surprised? Caitlin Clark is Caitlin Clark, and she does that,” Fever forward Aliyah Boston said after the game. “It was a great shot. She’s a shooter and you can’t leave her that open.”

Boston’s reaction reflected the confidence Indiana continues to have in Clark, even when outside conversations grow louder. The Fever have had to navigate a season filled with scrutiny, expectations and constant attention around their young star. But in the final seconds, the game came down to the same thing it often does for Indiana: Clark with the ball and a chance to decide the outcome.

Fever head coach Stephanie White praised Clark’s poise and reminded observers how rare those moments are.

“I think sometimes we take great players, and certainly generational talent, for granted,” White said. “What she did was incredible for us. She’s going to have many more moments like that. I know she is. And we needed this one tonight.”

White also acknowledged that the attention surrounding Clark is unlikely to disappear, regardless of one clutch shot.

“I don’t know that the noise is ever going to be quiet,” White said. “This is what Caitlin does. She makes big shots, and she has big moments.”

Clark admitted the moment carried pressure, especially after she missed free throws earlier.

“You better make this,” Clark said when asked what she was thinking before the shot. “Because I missed my free throws.”

She also pointed out that the final look came from a play Indiana regularly works on after practice. The execution was sharp, and Washington’s defensive gamble helped open the window.

“All those plays are plays we work on after practice, so everybody knows their role, everybody knows what they’re going to do,” Clark said. “Cotie almost got a fingertip on it. It kind of worked out perfectly that she went for the steal.”

Then came Clark’s most honest line of the night.

“Honestly probably the most wide-open shot I had all night,” Clark said. “My hands got a little clammy, but still went in, I guess.”

The shot also carried a deeper storyline because of McMahon’s involvement. Clark and McMahon were familiar opponents in college, when Clark starred at Iowa and McMahon played at Ohio State. Their rivalry gained attention during Clark’s college career, especially after a 2024 Iowa-Ohio State game when Clark was photographed wearing an Ohio State giveaway shirt after an Iowa win, a moment that frustrated Buckeyes fans.

McMahon later referenced the incident after Ohio State defeated Iowa, saying she took that type of moment personally. Now, with McMahon drafted by Washington in 2026, that rivalry has moved to the WNBA stage.

On this night, Clark got the final word.

For Indiana, the win was about more than a highlight. The Fever needed a close-game response, and they got one from their franchise guard. Clark’s game-winner gave Indiana momentum, confidence and another reminder that even during shooting slumps, great players only need one clean look to change the story.

The Fever left Washington with a win. Clark left with another clutch moment added to her growing WNBA résumé.
