STWF Sports | ARLINGTON, Texas | June 14, 2026 — The Dallas Wings continued reshaping their backcourt Sunday, announcing the signing of veteran guard Sug Sutton to a rest-of-season contract.
Sug Sutton Joins the Dallas Wings
The move gives Dallas another experienced ball-handler as the Wings push deeper into the 2026 WNBA season. Sutton, a 5-foot-8 guard with multiple years of WNBA experience, brings pace, playmaking and defensive toughness to a roster looking to maintain its strong early-season position.
Sutton began the 2026 season with the Portland Fire after being selected from the Washington Mystics in April’s expansion draft. She appeared in three games for Portland before being waived on May 21, averaging 11.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists during that brief stint. Even in limited time, Sutton showed her ability to organize an offense and create opportunities for teammates.
Before joining Portland, Sutton spent parts of two seasons with Washington. She appeared in 50 total games for the Mystics, including the 2025 campaign, when she averaged 7.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists across 43 games. Her assist average ranked 17th in the WNBA last season, marking the second time in her career that she finished among the league’s top 20 in assists.
Dallas Executive Vice President and General Manager Curt Miller pointed to Sutton’s experience and two-way ability as key reasons for the addition.
“We are excited to add Sug Sutton to our roster,” Miller said. “Sug is an experienced point guard in the WNBA, starting 43 games during the 2025 season. She plays with great pace and adds a quality defender on the perimeter. We’re happy to welcome Sug back to the state of Texas.”
Sutton’s WNBA journey has included several stops. Washington originally drafted her with the 36th overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, and she appeared in 12 games as a rookie before being waived prior to the 2021 season. Phoenix later signed her before the 2023 season, giving Sutton a larger opportunity to establish herself.
With the Mercury in 2023, Sutton produced one of the strongest stretches of her professional career, averaging 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. Her assist average ranked ninth in the WNBA that season, proving she could run an offense efficiently while still contributing as a scorer. Across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, she appeared in 62 games for Phoenix before being acquired by Washington in August 2024.
Her arrival in Dallas comes at an important time. The Wings have dealt with backcourt adjustments throughout the season, including the recent absence of starting point guard Paige Bueckers due to a right ankle injury. Sutton gives head coach Jose Fernandez another guard who can handle pressure, initiate sets and defend opposing guards on the perimeter.
Beyond the WNBA, Sutton has built a strong international résumé. Since 2020, she has played overseas in Australia, Poland and Turkey, gaining valuable experience in different systems and styles of play. In 2023, she earned All-Polish EBLK Second Team honors while playing for Enea AZS Poznan.
The signing also marks a return to familiar territory. Sutton played collegiately at the University of Texas from 2016 to 2020, appearing in 131 games with 65 starts. During her Longhorns career, she averaged 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists. As a senior, she averaged 9.9 points and a team-high 4.1 assists, ranking fourth in the Big 12 in assists per game.
Sutton was also recognized as one of the top point guards in college basketball, twice being named a Nancy Lieberman Award Top-10 Finalist in 2019 and 2020. She earned 2020 All-Big 12 Second Team honors, was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and finished her Texas career tied for ninth in program history with 419 assists.
For Dallas, Sutton adds stability, depth and proven production at a critical position. Her ability to push tempo, distribute the ball and defend fits the Wings’ need for reliable guard play as they continue competing in a crowded WNBA race.
